White Willow are a progressive rock band from Norway that formed in 1993. The band has gone through several incarnations, with the
initial lineup consisting of Jacob Holm-Lupo (guitars), Jan Tariq Rahman (keyboards), Audun Kjus (flute), Sara Trondal (vocals), Peter Albers (bass
guitar) and Henning Eidem (drums). In the late 90s, Jacob Holm-Lupo terminated White Willow "the group" and continued as a solo project before once
again building a lineup of musicians. For their fifth album, the lineup changed once again, with most notably new singer Trude Eidtang joining Lars
Fredrik Frøislie, Jacob Holm-Lupo, Ketil Einarsen, Marthe Berger Walthinsen, and Aage Moltke Schou.
Shortly after recording the demo left the band Albers: it attracts a funky, and it goes to a group of Obi Won. His place was taken by friend Eydema -
Calvert Suzanne (Suzanne «Sassi» Calvert). In this structure, and in the studio drummer Fruitcake next demo was recorded, containing re-recorded
version of «Snowfall», as well as the composition «The Withering of the Boughs», «Grankvad» and «Lord of Night». Musicians sent this demo led
the independent American label The Laser's Edge Ken to Golden. Record liked Ken, but he asked White Willow few heavier sound. Thus was born the
song «John Dee's Lament». Thus, the musicians were able to begin recording their first full length album. The authors of the music of the
future of the debut album were John and Jacob. While all the musicians White Willow was little more than 20 years.
Just during the recording of the album the group decided to leave Sarah Trondal. In its place he was invited Eldrid Johansen (Eldrid Johansen). The
trouble does not come alone: right after that go Calvert and Henning Eydem. As a result, during the recording sessions in the group did not have
a permanent bass player and drummer. Sometimes in the studio it was just three drummer, so it is not surprising that some of the tracks had been
overwritten after the final details.
Already at the end of studio work to the White Willow joined bassist Alexander Engebretsen (Alexander Engebretsen), which were appended two
compositions: «Now in these Fairylands» and «Cryptomenysis». For recording the last track had to bring the hammer of black metal band Ved Buens
Ende. Fortunately, all of the above suffering were not in vain: debut group album «Ignis Fatuus», was very warmly received by the press. Moreover,
the drive is listed in the Best Album hundred editions of «The Billboard Guide» to «Progressive Music», as for the label The Laser's Edge, he
became the best-selling position in 1995. And we must pay tribute to the group: the smaller the plate hardly deserves. Perfect North progressive with
strong Gothic flavor (the closest reference can serve Sinkadus) once again makes one think that the palm in the art-rock '90s belongs
However, success is not troubled Jacob: issue a permanent drummer and bass player was still acute. He remembered Danny Young uchivshemsya with him in
the same school and assist in the recording of the first demo, The Orchid Garden, as well as his friend, bassist Pere Svendsen (Per Christian
Svendsen). Interests two friends ran far enough away from the program: their favorites were Aerosmith, Faith No More and Mr. Bungle. At the same time
the group returned vocalist Sarah Trondal and Eldrid Johansen left composition. At this time, White Willow were invited to participate in a very
prestigious festival Progfest, held in Los Angeles. The team had the opportunity to speak in the same cage with such monsters progressive as
Hungarians Solaris. Their performance was immortalized in the form of videos and CD «Progfest '95» French label Musea.
During a trip to the United States musicians thought about recording a second album. After returning from overseas, work began on the material, but
the second time the group left Trondal. In its place was adopted girl with stunningly expressive and sad voice Eriksen Sylvia (Sylvia Erichsen).
Despite internal tensions (in particular, another bassist Frode Leah (Frode Lia)), work on the second album «Ex Tenebris» continued. However, the
real surprise for Jacob was a letter from Mattias Olson (Mattias Olsson), drummer of the legendary Swedish Anglagard. Matthias not only helped with
the record of the plate, but also made her producer. Thus, the album still was recorded and was released in March 1998.
Perhaps the disk is slightly inferior to the debut work. Music White Willow was still sad and gothic, but it looks like on the «Ex Tenebris»
musicians have gone too far with some melancholy: it is quite possible for an album to fall asleep. Nevertheless, this work is completed the formation
of White Willow as a full-fledged permanent bone formation.
On the next album - «Sacrament» - sat behind the drums Ege Skou (Aage Schou), the keyboard played Brinar Dumbo (Brynjar Dambo), and the bass kept
Johan Seboe (Johannes Saboe). And, of course, the guitar was in the hands of Jacob Holm-Lupo, and behind the microphone stand was Sylvia Erichsen.
Perhaps, «Sacrament» may well claim the title of the strongest work of White Willow: six songs presented are designed in the best tradition of
Scandinavian art-rock, they are full of genuine sadness and strikingly beautiful. Interestingly, a few points of the plate remarkably reminiscent of
the cult French group late 70s Asia Minor. But there is no plagiarism, of course not.
