Anubis is a Progressive Rock band from Sydney in Australia.
Formed in 2004 by vocalist/bassist Robert James Moulding and keyboardist/guitarist David Eaton, the duo began crafting what was to become the band’s
debut opus 230503. As the record grew, the band expanded to include Steve Eaton (drums) in 2005 and Douglas Skene (guitars) in 2006. The record took
shape under the watchful eye of producer and guitarist Dean Bennison. The record also included contributions from bassist Nick Antoinette who
subsequently joined the band in March 2007. 230503 was a concept piece that told a story inspired by the 2003 death of a close friend of David and
Robert, to whom the record was dedicated.
The band took the unusual step of releasing the record via torrent sites in 2009 and 230503 quickly became viral, attracting reviews and positive
critiscism all over the world, and as the band began a fruitful relationship with Just for Kicks music in Germany, the CD version quickly sold out.
In 2010, Anubis joined the Birds Robe Collective, and independent Australian record label headed up by Mike Solo (Super Florence Jam), helping to
raise Anubis’ profile through support slots with Australian progressive heavyweights, Unitopia, Aria award nominated Post-Rock prodigies,
Sleepmakeswaves and US-based Multimedia specialists ‘The Red Paintings’.
Anubis and BRC’s hard work paid off in 2011 with the release of the concept piece, ‘A Tower of Silence’ which, bouyed by 230503’s exposure,
quickly went on to sell very well overseas, shooting up Progressive Rock charts and gaining a unexpected cult following. Critical acclaim was
heightened by ‘The Holy Innocent’ appearing on the cover CD of Classic Rock Presents Prog magazine, alongside names like Big Big Train and
At home, Anubis released ‘And I Wait for my World to End’ as a single which unexpectedly recieved significant independent radio airplay, leading
to the band’s supporting ‘The Red Paintings’ on their ‘Chinese Whispers’ tour of Australia, and joining the bill and compilation CD for
‘Progfest 2012’. The band climaxed 2012 with an emotionally charged performance of ‘A Tower of Silence’ in Sydney which marked the end of the
album’s support and the end of an era, as it was annonounced in early 2013 that Nick Antoinette was no longer a part of the group.
The band are currently finishing mixes for a live release, entitled ‘Flesh, Water and Bone’, chronicling the power of the 230503/Tower band on
stage, and are currently in the process of recording their next studio album, entitled ‘Hitchhiking to Byzantium’ which is scheduled for
completion mid to late 2013.
