nFo about the artist
Waifs Strays are Amos Nelson and Rich Beanland. A duo born out of diverse musical backgrounds but
brought together by a love of house music, pure and simple.
A decade in house music saw Amos cut his teeth promoting and DJing at some of Bristol’s most influential parties, including the infamous superclub,
Scream. In addition he has played across the UK and Europe, with virtually every big name DJ you care to mention, holding residencies at some of dance
music’s most influential parties including The Rock in Bristol and the legendary Escape in Swansea.
Rich took a different path, first in the world of jungle and drum ‘n’ bass, before finding himself at the heart of the fledgling dubstep scene.
Producing under his ‘Soundbox Productions’ moniker and releasing on various labels including dubstep giant Boka Records, chance meeting on
Bristol’s after-party circuit saw this duo’s diverse musical backgrounds brought together to the unique sound of Waifs Strays.
Their debut track – 2010’s late night roller ‘3am’ – was rapidly snapped up for Matt Tolfrey’s Leftroom imprint, and set the benchmark
high; featuring in DJ Mag’s essential releases, and received props from many of the major players. This was soon followed by ‘Yeah Yeah’, which
picked up massive international support following its debut at the Detroit Music Conference, and going onto become one of Pete Tongs Essential New
Tunes and one of the records of 2011.
The pair continued to go from strength to strength, releasing their ‘Body Shiver’ EP on Hot Creations (which became a number 2 record on Beatport
and featured on Jamie Jones’s Fabric Compilation) and their ‘Be Patient’ EP on Futureboogie; with both releases gaining further praise and
international support from DJs and party-goers alike.
With the duo being hailed as part of a nu-breed of Bristol house DJs and producers that include Julio Bashmore and Eats Everything, a diary full of
bookings resulted, reaching across the globe and including such clubs as DC10 and Fabric.
Since then the pair have released records on Leftroom, Resonance, Futureboogie and Dirtybird, more support from the scene and from Pete Tong in the
form of Essential New Contender and another Essential New Tune in the form of ‘I Saw Yo Girl’, released at the beginning of 2013.
2013 sees Waifs Strays continue a relentless schedule of touring and producing with tours planned for Australia and the Americas, and releases for
Hot Creations, Futureboogie and a host of other labels.
